Responsible Gambling
Responsible gambling means keeping betting as paid-for entertainment, with limits you set in advance and the ability to stop. This page explains the protections available in Great Britain, what changes when a bookmaker is not part of GAMSTOP, and the practical steps that keep your betting under control. It is for adults aged 18 and over. Nothing here is a route to income, and no betting site is completely safe.
Commercial disclosure: Betting Not On Gamstop may earn commission when readers use links to operators we list. Commission does not decide rankings or what we say about an operator's risks. Details are on our About Us page where available, and in our Terms and Conditions.
What GAMSTOP is and what it covers
GAMSTOP is the free, national online self-exclusion scheme for Great Britain. Once you register, every online gambling operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) must block your account and stop marketing to you. You choose an exclusion period of six months, one year or five years. GAMSTOP exclusion periods cannot be shortened once they begin, and ending one afterwards requires a deliberate process rather than a single click.
The scheme only binds operators that hold a UKGC licence. It does not cover gambling in shops, and it does not reach overseas operators. Note the distinction: Great Britain is the UKGC's jurisdiction, while Northern Ireland has separate gambling law, so check the position if you live there.
What "not on GamStop" really means
A betting site that is not on GAMSTOP generally holds an overseas gambling licence rather than a UKGC one. Accepting British customers is not the same as being authorised to serve them. These operators are not required to follow UKGC rules, and that has practical consequences:
- Your GAMSTOP registration will not block your account there.
- Deposit limits, affordability checks and cooling-off tools may be optional, weaker or absent.
- Complaints cannot be escalated to UK-approved dispute services in the same way, so withdrawal disputes may be harder to resolve.
- Terms such as wagering requirements, bonus expiry dates and cashout limits can be tougher, so read them first.
If you have self-excluded because gambling was causing harm, using a site outside the scheme undermines the protection you chose. We strongly advise against it. If you are unsure whether your betting is still under control, pause and speak to a support service first.
Set limits before you deposit
Decide your limits when you are calm, not mid-bet. A simple routine:
- Work out a monthly entertainment amount you could lose entirely without affecting rent, bills, food or savings.
- Set a deposit limit at or below that figure, and a loss limit if the site offers one.
- Set a session time limit or reminder where available.
- Never chase losses by depositing more than planned.
- Keep gambling money separate from everyday money.
Worked example: if you set £40 a month, a £10 bet at 2/1 returns £30 profit plus your £10 stake if it wins, and loses £10 if it does not. Decide in advance that four such losses means you stop until next month.
Bonuses and the pressure to bet more
Welcome offers can encourage larger deposits than you planned. Before accepting any, check the wagering requirements (how many times you must bet the bonus), minimum qualifying odds, bonus expiry dates, maximum bonus bets and cashout limits. A bonus is optional; declining one is a legitimate way to keep control. Our listed operators advertise offers in euros, dollars or pounds, and conversion fees may apply to GBP accounts, so confirm the currency and terms directly with the operator.
Features like early cash-out, live in-play betting and accumulators move quickly or carry high odds against you, so they deserve extra caution. Betting tips are opinions, not guarantees.
Payments and verification as safety checks
Payment options differ by operator and can change, so verify what is available to British customers rather than assuming. Debit cards, e-wallets and bank transfers are the usual routes, and some non GamStop sites accept cryptocurrency. Cryptocurrency can be volatile and harder to recover if something goes wrong. Check for payment fees and currency conversion charges.
Legitimate operators carry out KYC and identity verification and may ask for source-of-funds evidence before paying out. Expect this; an operator that never asks anything deserves more suspicion, not less. Withdrawal processing times and limits vary and are advertised figures, not promises.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you can afford, or borrowing to bet
- Chasing losses or raising stakes to win back money
- Hiding betting from family or friends
- Feeling irritable or anxious when not betting
- Neglecting work, relationships or sleep
If several apply, stop and talk to someone. Gambling should never be treated as a way to solve money problems.

Our approach to the operators we list
The operators on this site, such as Tenobet, Trixino and Betninja, are ranked by our editorial ratings, which reflect our research into offers, terms and features. They are not customer-review scores, and we have not claimed to have deposited or withdrawn money with them. Information was checked on 1 October 2026 and can change. Several advertise generous headline bonuses, and the trade-off is usually tougher wagering conditions and weaker UK-specific protection. If you also want casino games, see our non GamStop casinos guide, and the same limits advice applies. Questions or corrections? Use our contact page.
Next step
If betting is still fun and within your budget, set your limits first and keep to them. If it is not, register with GAMSTOP or call GamCare before doing anything else. Stopping is always a valid choice.
